Generally I think using off-beat things is not a bad idea (I have a knoppix install just for longer surfing sessions, not yet set up as a VM), in a firewall I will try for a often updated product. While the base hiding functions are probably "safer" (less prone to directly targeted attack), new vectors of malware such as rootkits/ hidden VM's will not be sought out be abandoned products.
