I did not get a response so I am reposting my question.

If I open a Word document form VFP 9 in read/only mode the "Save" menu item will not let then make changes to the document and save it. They can still use the "Save As" menu item. If I disable any of the menu items in the "File" menu it seems to become permanent.

For now I just told the user that the only thing they should do in the Word document is print it or exit it.

Since I do not know when they close the Word document I do not see how I can control it form VFP. I was hoping that I could create a VBA autoclose macro to reset the values. Does anyone know a way of checking if a Word document is opened read/only in VBA and what commands I would need to reset the File menu to its default values.

TIA
