Interesting problem. I usually just tell the agencies what my rate is and either they like it or they don't. Actually I always quote double my rate because I don't like the fact that the agency makes money on my work. Of course that approach only works if you can find enough to keep alive without an agency.

I really hate agencies and I usually tell them my rate is $250/Hr just to ehar how fast they hang up their phones.
