I suspect it's a true story. The natives back then were a pretty wily bunch. Some travelling band of indians got $40.00 worth of trinkets in trade for something they didn't even own. I'll bet they were laughing all the way to the smokehouse. When they told their friends, they probably all went into hysterics.
