Maybe they remembered how many officers got friendly shot in Vietnam? While I haven't seen any of these guys in real life (for which I'm glad), what I've seen in movies is more than enough, and I figure reality was worse. I'm glad the things are changing. A soldier who wasn't humiliated every day is less prone to take it out on civilians. A lot depends on the role model he was most exposed to.
