>>My tolerance for libertine behavior of all kinds is probably a dozen notches higher than most peoples but when somebody is engaged in behavior that cries out for public exposure and humiliation ( Clinton, Craig, Foley, JFK ) there are grounds for concern.

Are you serious? Clinton exercised terrible judgement in allowing his personal addictions to interfere with his duties and created a major distraction. My concern is not so much what he did as the indications that what he did was not by rational choice but rather by failure to deal with a compulsive disorder.

JFK went way beyond that. His liaison with Judith Cambell Exner - Sam Giancana's mistress - was especially dubious given that his father had been a bootlegging business partner of Frank Costello and that there is every reason to believe Giancana was instrumental in JFK being president in that he was the mob boss of Chicago ( or was co-boss with Mayor Daley ) and that he sent a fellow named Skinny d'Amato to Wheeling with a suitcase full of money to buy the West Virginia primary and deny Humphrey the nomination.

JFK's affair with Ellen Romesch - who was most probably an East German spy - seems a bit of bad judgement and was of great concern in intelligence circles.

More high-profile - if less infra dig - was his liaison with Mary Meyer - wife of Cord Meyer, a CIA heavy-weight. She was a very good friend of most of haute Washington and a complex person in her own right. The affair was not discrete and it is said she kept a journal ( which, depending on who you ask, ended up in the hands of Ben Bradlee - Washington Post - or James Jesus Angleton - Counterintelligence director at CIA )

( fun fact: in 1964 Mary Meyer was found murdered on the towpath trail in Georgetown. Early this year Howard Hunt's son claimed that in a deathbed confession Hunt claimed Cord Meyer organized the assassination of JFK at the behest of LBJ - which seems a bit crazy but not so crazy if you know much about Bobby Baker. Fun fact #2 - Nancy Carole Tyler, Bobby Baker's secretary died in a plane crash in 1965. Her roommate was Mary Jo Kopechne. Small world. )

There were many more of course but the poiont is that if only for the ammunition he gave J Edgar Hoover it is definitely the sign of a compulsive disorder - a quality that is kind of disturbing even in an otherwise gifted person.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
