The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fford (not a typo). And then read the rest of the series. This guy is right up there with Douglas Adams and Tom Holt.
Duly noted. I've seen the Fford guy on SFBC's ads (which still arrive, though I buy books from them maybe once a year), but couldn't decide because the team which writes blurbs for them writes them all in the same vein, and should be executed twice a day. The worst pieces of... work get equal acclaim as do masterpieces.
