If the Democrats were witch hunting him that would be one thing but the GOP is the party screaming for his resignation.

I think the Wag the Dog theory doesn't play here.

Now as to Karl Rove's resignation - there is an old saying in intelligence circles "Retirement is another form of cover." <s>

>>>OK, let's consider this conspiracy theory: his case is brought up in a real witch hunt style, with two main goals. First is to divert the attention of public from Gonzales. One day was enough, next day we must have something else. The other is to ostensibly let another of their soldiers down the drain, only to later show that the whole accusation is made on flimsy grounds - and hence cast the shadow of doubt over all the other accusations (and indictments), and start yelling about a witch hunt. Election day draweth near...

>>I will render you the compliment of assuming this is meant entirely ironically and is not in any was proposed seriously ...

>Sounds crazy enough to be true, doesn't it? And it would kill two birds with one stone. Just look at this "oops, posted a message at the wrong phone number" blooper today. Sounds like an elaborate scheme to paint this guy as a naive guy who suddenly found himself surrounded with a world he knows nothing about (which may have been true in the room where he went to, well, rest). He's not supposed to know anything about the secret language of birds, is he? Gay birds too. Then all the mumbling about his failure to seek legal counsel (as if there's anyone who qualifies for burger flipping who doesn't know that you don't do anything with the police before lawyering up first), then "I'll resign", "I won't resign", "I'll resign, maybe"... and so he's pretty much painted a victim of wrongful, or at least unsubstantial, accusations. These get dismantled over some time, shown to be a result of a witch hunt. Then all the other accusations start looking suspect too.

>IOW, I'm not proposing any of these guys :). But this may just be a lucky hunch. We'll see, if after this they start re-defending other boys from the gang, mentioning this case along the way...

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
