Of course this is a question of personal taste and preferneces. I usually listen to music through high quality loudspeakers, but I sometimes use my Koss electrostatic headphones which I bought for about 300 USD twenty years ago. Having the Koss as a reference, almost every other headphone I have tried sound "boxy" or unnatural. And believe me, I have tried almost all the best headphones available. I just came home from Berlin where I spent four days at the greatest consumer electronics fair in the world, IFA, and I tried a lot of headphones. Only a few could compete with my trusty old Koss.

Using a MP3 player as signal source, especially the high pitch notes sound terrible in my ears, they sound "rattly" and artificial. Personally I almost never use earphones, unless I have no alternatives.

It's like when you are used to driving a powerful BMW sports car, driving a small Nissan for a few days makes you long for the BMW. And I drive a powerful BMW sports car every day. :-)
