The virus writer would benefit by gaining access to his real identity, i.e. it would spread by sending genuine messages from that machine, instead of sending spoofed emails. It may be able to bypass some security that outgoing messages may undergo, or to get to addresses where it would be blacklisted otherwise, but as you say, it doesn't mean much when it's already there.
