Well, I suppose then you need to define 'effective'. There are people all over the world who do not belong to churches and are doing effective work. People in Africa digging wells or teaching are doing effective work. When you teach somebody, you do lasting work whether you belong to a church or not. Remember the old saying - 'Teach a man to fish...'? That's lasting work. To say that only churches are capable of doing effective and lasting work is to me, completely off the mark.

And it is regardless of any belief in a supreme being, or not. Religious people do horrible things and they do wonderful things. Exactly the same is true of atheists and agnostics. People are people everywhere. Colour doesn't matter, race doesn't matter, gender doesn't matter, religion or lack of it doesn't matter. If you are decent you're decent, if not, not.
