A lot of that will depend upon the dvd player you have. Some of them will play mpeg2 or mpeg4 files. Depending upon how you re-encode the file you can actually get the thing to fit on a CD and it will play in a DVD player (VCD files are great for that).
These guys have something called gxtranscoder which is freeware and converts to all kinds of formats...
