The character Đ was omitted from most of the typewriters (mostly of German origin, one lever short, German has 4 non-Ascii characters, we have 5). It was chosen as the one we can, well, replace with a similarly sounding dj (but if you heard them both, they differ like eye and butt cheek), specially because there's only about a dozen words where 'dj' actually occurs. Which was wrong - I maintain a list of 21 words, which would rise into hundreds if I counted their possible word forms. Furthermore, of the three officially recognized dialects, in one there's a "de", in another "dje" and in yet another "đe" - and if we accept dj for đ, the difference between the latter two vanishes in many words (well, in writing - I guess even Anglophones could hear the difference).
