Like I said, soccer is not my area of expertise, and I don't really understand why that isn't offside.

It wasn't offside. It's a shoot on goal and not fake for the goalkeeper. If that's a shoot that can be "imagine from goalkeeper as a pass the other player" than would be offside for referee.
