It's not that MS is trying to lock you into it's own formats, far from it...

Download foobar - at http://www.foobar2000.org/ - it plays everything, including a few formats other players wouldn't even smell, does conversions, has multiple playlists (and never lost one), doesn't call home (can't remember if I ever caught it), is free and open source, interface is neat and simple.
