Well, I actually wasn't following the docs when I did this (maybe we're talking about different things?). I had a set of 5 or 6 methods that I needed to expose in a web service. I created a new set of methods for each of them in my code-behind page. Then I added another method which handled authentication (and is called from each of the other methods). Each of my methods ended up having username/password as the first two parameters, plus whatever other parameters I required.
