I think there is more than a degree of difference between the postion of a Communist in the US ( where people just laugh at you ) and being murdered by the state in Iran for being homosexual.

There is no human right to have other people approve of you or like you. But when the state is involved in anathematizing a group ( and here the US is most flagrantly at fault for its treatment of gays and people like polygamists ) it has crossed the line. Reagan actually had it right when he said it is the role of government to protect us from each other, but when it tries to protect us from ourselves it has gone too far.

But Iran - or Cuba or Saudi Arabia or ... - doesn't even see this as a problem (any more than some of our more righteous citizens would if given the chance)

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
