>I am using semaphore locking method,.every table I have I create a new field >thathat contains a logical field to determine if the record is locked or not...
>simply disallow an edit if this field is .T.
I have heard of the technique. However, I have never seen compelling evidence to resort to semaphores. If something crashes, you need to manually go and unlock records. Seems totally counter-productive to me.
>I know it sounds like an amatuer in VFP but it works...Automatic locking in >VFP is crappy and can't depend on the Network to handle so many >transactions/locking etc..
What do you base that conclusion on??? VFP's locking schema works fine. As for depending on the Network, well, thats a network issue. I have never had a problem with Novell or NT handling locks. Obviously, you need to be judicious in your use of locks.
>it seems that this was recommended in the book titled "Using VFP 5.0" >published by QUE, ...author Michael Antonovich ..page 705
The only thing that gives that book credibility is that folks like Rod Paddock and Rick Strahl helped to write the book. Mr. Antonovich is professional writer - not a professional developer. Sorry, I think you need to write apps to have credibility when it comes to authoring books.
