I did try this and the restore appeared to work but the process is followed by a message that the database is "not available." I saw a message on another forum indicating that I should run sp_updatestats after a restore from 7.0 but obviously I can't do that unless I can access the database.

I wondered if the problem could be with the permissions on the database. Perhaps I have them set so that the database can't be accessed at the client site? However, I'm logged in there as SA so I'd think the admin could access anything...
