Required by regedit, which is probably written in c++, where the backslash is an escape character (i.e. the guy most likely to lead a jailbreak :). The usual interpretation is just like in VFP's search/replace dialog: \t for tab, \r for carriage return, \n for line feed... and \\ for \.
