Goldwater's campaign slogan was "In your heart you know he's right." The other side came up with a good rejoinder: "In your guts you know he's nuts."

The thing you have to say for Goldwater is that although he lost (got wiped out, in fact) he set the Republican Party on a course it remains on over 30 years later. You have to give a man credit for being influential.
