Luis,

The last time I checked, Sun's Java did not support COM out of the box. You had to use a third-party bridge to get it working, which made things more complex. This may have changed, since MS and Sun are supposedly working on better interoperability these days (do you know Craig?). Here are some options for Java:

Ruby does support COM on Windows:

Of course, you could use Web Services instead of COM.
