Aviatrix and actrix were popular words in the late 1930’s, to describe female aviators and actors.

Then we get into the 1970’s when Berkeley, California began the “politically correct” disuse of any word which included man or men. So it became politically incorrect to say, mail man, or garbage man as an example. Those words are considered sexist. It should be mail person or garbage person. :)
