I believe history is simply repeating itself here. I'm not saying these guys are nazis, but I heard a discussion of a book written by a US professor after WWII. He went to Germany to interview people to understand how the German citizens let the nazis get to power.
The one theme heard from many he interviewed was that, actually living there you didn't see the progression from A to B to C and what that meant. Everything was done in little steps and it was hard for the average citizen to see the big picture.
I hope that historians don't look back on the early 21st century US and make the same claims.
