>Oh, completely wrong. Joe Torre is about the classiest guy you could ever want to meet.
>
>But with the Yankees it's all about winning. Winning 96 games and not winning the World Series is for losers. What's miraculous is that he lasted as long as he did. George Steinbrenner used to change managers like some guys change underwear. Torre lasted as long as he did because he had the ability to roll with the punches and focus on his job.
>
>He was a player's manager. One of my favorite sports quotes was when he said he understood players so well because he hit .360 one year and .260 the next and knew he was trying just as hard both seasons.
>
>He is getting up there in years but I bet some smart team hires him.
I don't think there's any question about that. He was in the playoffs every year, and this year, early on, it looked like there was no possible way it was going to happen again, but he did it. He does a great job of managing all those huge egos, and he does it while keeping his respect. I wonder if they'll be able to find another manager who can do that. Somebody will want him.

>>So the Steinbrenners think they don't really need Torre. Personally, I think they're wrong.
