There was an X# out of Cambridge labs, which was one of the two threads that evolved into Linq.

F# stands for Functional (language) #, functional languages being a special kind of language (although Python or any language capable of lambdas, hence .Net 3.0 or is it 3.5 or do I care except that it all helps Samuel create VFP.Net), can emulate functional languages).
