Plenty of blame to go around in that group. Bush and Cheney were bound and determined to invade Iraq and Rumsfeld was too arrogant to the military men who told him they needed more troops.

I still have no clue how we're supposed to get out of this mess. I don't see any good solutions, including packing up and leaving. The Sunnis would be massacred if we did.

>I probably should have stated that more clearly. It is in the planning ( civilian DOD - buck stops at Rumsfeld, State, executive - Bush, Cheney - coordination ) that the post-war was bumbled. The military seems to be working very well given the cards they were dealt.

>>I have some sympathy for the military. They are trained to fight and instead they are being asked to keep the peace. Between two groups who don't want peace.

>>Peacekeeping should be the job of diplomats, if only we had any.

>>>Point was, there is a contingency plan in the Pentagon for *everything*. If there isn't, they aren't doing their job.

>>>( the exception - a contingency plan for the Iraq post-war - is a good example of where they weren't doing their job ! )
