The ethnic hatred wasn't there - it was mostly forgotten, at least in my generation. We've all had friends all over the country. It's when the politicians in grab for power started rousing the local version of rednecks and bible thumpers that it was reinvented.

And that's the real danger - the once civilized country can be pushed into any sort of barbarism by sheer propaganda.
