This is becoming quite interesting. I can swear I read an article somewhere, with a bunch of references etc etc, where it said the thing actually never happened and that it was invented for propagandistic reasons. Not being here at the times, I could have chosen to believe either version.

So far, I believe neither - the "truth is just a trick" (Milorad Pavić).
