You can definitely use this as a database - the free version (eg. for the client distributions) is called SQL Server 2005 Express - and you could either connect to it using

- an ODBC channel + SQLCONNECT(...)
or
- SQLSTRINGCONNECT(...) without an extra ODBC channel
