Kevin's framework does that and I could study his framework in depth to learn it better but I like to have available alternative ideas for methods of accomplishing the layer separation in a hardcopy reference.

I think that would be a good book, then. I think if you understand both Kevin's and Rocky's concepts, you're good to go. I won't make a claim to completely understanding either, but I think both their ideas are well thought out, and explained well.
