I did know about that from some time and I still find this lie outrageous. I don't care about where the money is spent, I want to know where it originated and where it's transformed. To favor local economy and to respect the environment, I often favor one product over another based on the proximity of the producer.

Can you imagine the amount of energy (fuel) burned to transport a product "Made in Canada" where the ressource come from South Africa, transformed in British Columbia and sold to me in Quebec?

>This is apparently similar in the USA too...
>
>I've always opted for products that state "Product of Canada" or "Product of the USA" on their labels if I have the choice. Especially since all the talk about the sanitary qualities and suspect additives of Chinese and far-eastern foods.
>
>Two networks here recently exposed the true meaning of the words "Product of Canada" when they appear on labels of foods or anything else. What it really means is that the manufacturer is permitted to label a product as such if more than 50% of the cost of getting it to store shelves is spent in Canada!!!
>
>This means that none of the actual product being bought need be grown/caught/made in Canada (or the US for "product of USA" I presume).
>
>Since China and Viet Nam and Thailand, to name 3, have such cheap labour - especially in their countrysides - it really doesn't take much in-Canada expenditure to meet the 50% costs mark to permit "Product of Canada" on the labelling.
>
>Products like frozen fish, apple juice, processed and fresh garlic, some wheat-based products like cereals and hosts of others most likely have far-eastern products as the actual content!
>
>I never suspected this to be so. I am surprised that there hasn't been a HUGE public outcry about it.
>
>Are you concerned about the situation?
