Macro substitution is great in this case. Both the WHERE clause and the ORDER BY clause are very likely candidates for this kind of thing - you could have both clauses as variables; but there is also the alternative to macro-substitute the entire command, in other words:
lcCommand = "select ..."
&lcCommand
