Apples and oranges. College football (alone among NCAA sports) is heavily influenced by polls. You can't count on winning the championship on the field. To even have that opportunity you have to get the attention of the pollsters, and as you indicate one way to do that is to run up the score.

In the NFL, by contrast, if you win your division or qualify for a wild card -- BASED ON WINS AND LOSSES, NOT POINTS -- you have a chance to win the Super Bowl.

>Also, don't forget that in the college game, it wasn't enough to beat your opponent, you had to beat them BADLY to rate a high ranking, particularly if you were in the top 10 in the polls.

>>I think people may have hurt Bill's feelings implying the spygate thing had anything to do with the Patriots winning ways.

>>He's leaving Brady in, going for it on 4th down etc. Brady has 30 passing touchdowns so far this season !
>>
>>Why run up the score? Remember the words of immortal Denison alum and coach Woody Hayes when asked why he went for two against Michigan when he was up by 34 :

>>"Because I couldn't go for three."

>>Woody's lookin' down and smilin', Bill.

>>( and while I wrote this NE scored again - 51 zip. GO FOR TWO, BILL ! )
