>>>I think he was talking about a fake sac bunt. On the fake, the batter will pull the bat away at the last second hoping the ball isn't actually in the strike zone, and might possibly strike out. Has anyone in the history of baseball ever struck out when truly trying for a sac bunt on all 3 strikes?

>Well, I've seen pitchers who bunt badly, but again, missing completely three times for a strikeout on a sac bunt attempt? Usually pitchers bunt it into the air for an easy out because they have no idea how to do it. I agree that in the NL, pitchers should take more time in the cage. For obvious reasons, this is not much of an issue in the junior circuit.

"The junior circuit" -- now there's a baseball fan! <g>

There really is no excuse for NL pitchers not being able to bunt. No one expects them to be good hitters but they ought to at least be able to do that.

Well, most pitchers. Some sports talk guys around here were on a season long campaign for Lou Piniella to bat Carlos Zambrano 8th or even 7th. And they may have been right. But baseball being as tradition bound as it is, that just isn't done. It probably has been a few times but by and large pitchers hit 9th, period.
