I'm really torn about this issue. Could I sit on a jury and vote for the death penalty for any human being? I really don't know, but I suspect not. I could inflict pain and punishment on someone who did the same to my child though. I have absolutely no doubt about that. However, there are some crimes which are so hideous and vicious and inflict such suffering on people that I cannot see any appropriate punishment in this world today. There is no such thing has rehabilitation so punishment is the only course of action. Some people are just sick and have no empathy for others and will never see the error of their actions. I really don't see the benefit to the death penalty though. How is that punishment? We make it as comfortable as possible. These days, it is practically a drug to make you not care and not feel, just off to la la land, then lights out, and off you go. No pain, no punishment. The culprit is simply no longer here. Since I believe in an afterlife I think we may be sending them off to a better place. Or they may just reincarnate back down here and do it all again. However, I think our laws are a reflection of God's laws and need to be enforced here on earth. I think a lifetime of pain and suffering is what they should get and the only way for them to get that is for them to spend it in prison. I hate the idea of supporting vicious criminals for the remainder of their lifetime (heck they get better medical care than I do) though. Now, what about those who are innocent but sentenced? I think a lifetime sentence requires incontrovertible evidence. Then, let's make it as painful as possible.
