My problem is that when I want to load a file from the disk and I even specify the full path - what I get back is a copy of the file loaded in the project. I understand that is can be caused by using the same name for the file, but I was hoping I can still load files from disk.

I don't know whether this works, but did you try specifying the full path, for example with the FileToSTr() command?
