I work with a guy who's heavily into psychological thinking. He's a recovering alchoholic and is very involved in AA. And thru that he is constantly analyzing people's motives.
When discussing a scenario like this with him, arrogance usually doesn't come up. The behavior is usally an attempt by the person to cover a severe deficiency of their own. Some kind of insecurity.
