>Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge; it's very useful to me. I'll check out
www.pcnut.com for exact pricing of components. I was told that my 486 200 watt power supply was underpowered for a pentium motherboard and chip. Do you know what the pentium chip power supply requirements are? Will the K6-200 processor fit older pentium motherboards that have an original 90 mhz Pentiums? If so, I may be able to justify swapping one of those chips from a graphics workstation for a new replacement motherboard for the current 486 in question and using a faster chip on the graphics workstation.
A 200W supply should be adequate for a small system (single hard drive, motherboard, CD-ROM, NIC, sound card, etc.) My pretty heavily loaded NT Server box (dual PIIs, lots of memory, lots of hard drives) doesn't really tax a 250W supply.
The K6-200 is a dual core voltage processor; it has similar requirements to the Pentium MMX (P55C) processor chip. There is an overdrive type processor (as there is for the Pentium MMX) available that runs on some older Pentium boards; the cost of the Intel Overdrive processor is close to the cost of a new motherboard and K6 processor. I don't have pricing or availability information on AMD's Overdrives.
