I am a newbie at this too.. So simply setting the control's EnableViewState property to True has provided all the functionality I need. I think most, if not all web controls have a Protected method called SaveViewState. How do you want to use ViewState?
I am actually spending more time determining which controls can have EnableViewState set to False to reduce page size.
