IIRC, it's about "contribution to the community" or something of the kind. One could argue that MA&AK have contributed a lot by writing for Fox magazines - OTOH, it could be countered by them being paid for it (ah, the horrors of for-profit places), while they are absent from UT magazine where authors are not paid.
So, just like any other situation where a programmer's contribution is put on scale, there are so many ways to measure it, and so many different results you may get, depending on the yardstick used.
