But what I have seen is that these people have invested a lot of their spare time to bring to the attention all facts and arguments that they could think of, and their motives were sound.

However, there was also focus on the status, because it had become part of the issue since Andy used his status in that letter, thus impressing the head of the company. Do you think that this fact should not have been mentioned or should have been worked out in a different way?

If I was running a business and I received an unsolicited email as was sent I would probably bin it if I was happy with how my business was going.

Again I agree here. However, it was not an answer to my (quite serious) question. I try to find out whether 'we' have ethically handled this issue in the eyes of others. (I think the owner of a private company would have frowned the eyebrows upon receiving such a letter and put it in an archive for use in future, in case he'd want to fire the employee for something else. But I also think that it's different for the head of a government agency, esp. if impressed by a signature that says "Microsoft MVP".)
