North America is a continent. South America is a continent. I don't know the correct geographic designation of Central America or the islands in the Carribean.
America is the name commonly used for "United States of America" just as we say (for example)
Albania - Republic of Albania
Algeria - People's Democratic Republic of Algeria
Argentina - Argentine Republic
Australia - Commonwealth of Australia
Belgium - Kingdom of Belgium
Brazil - Federative Republic of Brazil
Egypt - Arab Republic of Egypt
"Americans" is the universally recognized term (at least in English) for citizens of America - the United States of America.
I have yet to hear a Canadian, Mexican, Brazilian, etc. identify himself as American.
When demonstrators around the world shout "Americans go home" they don't mean Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, or citizens of the Dominican Republic.
If somebody were to ask you your nationality, would you say American?
