I do not know about that, I have a 46" 1080p Sony Bravia XBR2 LCD, and a regular DVD looks so-so when I put it on a regular DVD player, and really good when I put it in the PS3, so I am very happy with how the PS3 upscales (and it upscales to 1080p).
