I think that was called Alexandrinism or something - comes down to "read my library and I'll tell you a real good joke". But it does have a point - higher education brings you into some realms where real fun begins. Kind of broadens your fields of humor, with both read and write user rights. Just imagine the fun we have here - would you expect your milkman to understand it all?

This is, and may not be, connected to getting a better job. Sometimes your employer-to-be may just fire off a joke for "who understands it, gets it"; a flash of understanding in your eyes may get you some points, or the whole thing may pass completely unnoticed by the candidate. I may be imagining things, but...
