Yes, I learned that in school as well. However, I believe that it was a case of what they wanted to teach U.S. school kids and not necessarily the entire information. While America may have been named after Amerigo Vespucci (still disputed among historians), the term America is derived from the Mayan term (and used in Spanish and Indian words as well). I could be completely wrong though as well since no one really knows for sure! :o)
