>>>Community only survives if members are willing to be led by people with whom they disagree.

>>That's the trouble with the Western mind, it believes in leaders too much, to the point where this belief has become an example for another belief: a self-fulfilling prophecy.

>You know, I was thinking the same thing when I read a recent post by the guy (MVP I think) who just started responding on this thread. Not sure who he is - haven't seen him around before now - but by the sounds of it he's really busy and important. Anyway, he said something about how a few people choose and the rest follow. It irked me, but I couldn't figure out why at first. Your post clarified it for me. It's the self-importance that a labeled group gives themselves. Even if no one else really cares. The MVP thing is a recognition that's cool to have, but isn't that pretty much it? You're hot shit with a technology, and that's good, but to me that's about as far as it goes. The "club" mentality never did much for me. Yeah, the quotes were a nod to the other thread you're playing in. <g>

If you are talking about who I'm pretty sure you are talking about, that was/is Rick Schummer Without saying this too rudely, unless you have been keeping a lot to yourself, he has done about a thousand times more for the FoxPro community than you have. Rick has been a leader of the Detroit FoxPro user's group for years, has written tons of articles, contributed tons of public domain code, and made many, many presentations, most of them well out of the limelight. Rick is not a limelight kind of guy. What he said in his post(s) here in the past day or so is right on the money: he isn't looking for controversy or drama. To me he is a pro's pro.

If I am coming on a little strongly, I think you deserved it for acting like he's some nobody just because you hadn't heard of him. Maybe you should pay more attention to the FoxPro world outside the UT chatter section.
