I too am aware of this. That's why I invited the MVPs to give at least their opinion about the hypothetical case. Perhaps the word 'hypothetical' is not the right word. Not being a native speaker, I don't know a better word. In Dutch this would have been very easy for me to formulate.

To use the way you worded it:
Now put yourself in the position that someone is claiming about one of your friend's actions. Will you go in public to condemn it? I can speak by myself only. In case I wouldn't, I'd still be prepared to speak about the case in the more abstract sense.
