George Washington suggested Thanksgiving be celebrated November 26th. Abraham Lincoln in 1863 asked that the last Thursday in November be celebrated as Thanksgiving. 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt set it one week earlier. He wanted to help business by lengthening the shopping period before Christmas. Congress ruled that after 1941 the 4th Thursday in November would be a federal holiday.
So now we know when we went “commercial” and the importance of Thanksgiving. Now about so called “Black Friday”? That term seems to have begun in the 1970’s. How many people stood outside of a store at 4 AM to “enjoy the specials of the day”? I like to avoid all crowds and stay from shopping malls this time of the year! :)
