But I still think Nirvana and Cobain's music/singing/guitar playing etc., while not unlistenable, were really pretty much just ordinary. I think if he hadn't died, their music would have eventually been forgotten. This way, there is always that mystique that makes him and the band seem like something bigger than they ever should have been.

On this piece of advice, I went to youtube and re-listened to 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' (which is a song I absolutely love by Leadbelly), and sorry, once again, I found his rendition pretty mundane. Maybe that isn't the best place to listen to it, but the sound was pretty true from what I recall of Cobain's singing.
